Carl Reichert – a short Bio
Carl Reichert was a painter known for his animal portraits and town scenes. He was born in Vienna on August 27, 1836, and passed away in Graz on April 5, 1918. He came from an artistic family—his father, Heinrich Reichert, was a portrait and animal painter, while his brother Heinrich worked in theater set design.
His uncles, Bonifaz Heinrich and Franz Heinrich Reichert, were also notable artists. Carl received his early training at the Academy of Drawing in Graz, where he studied under J. Tunner and E. Chr. Moser. He continued his studies in Munich and, from 1866 to 1867, in Rome with Ludwig Joh. Passini and Anton Romako.
From 1869 to 1910, he worked primarily in Vienna before returning to Graz. Reichert is celebrated for his finely detailed, small-scale dog portraits, and he also produced a series of engravings showcasing the “old” Graz, with a focus on the city’s castle. One of his works is part of the collection at the Baden-Baden museum.
Finding this painting while researching for this article was a real treasure: I spent a few family vacations in this area as a child. At least one of those vacations was during Winter. I remember enjoying the snow tremendously, since it wasn’t too common to see so much snow in the area I grew up in.
I found it beautifully framed on Amazon. Have a look, if you prefer a ready to hang painting! It makes a great gift – for yourself or for whoever you know enjoys beautiful art.

About the artist:
“Originally apprenticed to a goldsmith, Henry Raeburn showed enormous artistic talent as a young man. In 1784 he moved to London where he met the important portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. He spent some time in Italy but returned to Edinburgh in 1787 where he began painting portraits of the rich, famous and important people of his day. He was in constant demand and received many honours: in 1822 he was knighted when the King visited Edinburgh. Sir Henry Raeburn died a year later.”
