The Peony
But before we delve into these artistic gems, let’s have a closer look at the peony itself. Peonies are native to Asia, particularly China, where they have been cultivated for over 2,000 years. Initially prized for their medicinal properties (for instance for relief of some of the symptoms of menopause!), peonies eventually rose to prominence as a symbol of wealth, beauty, and good fortune.
Today, these magnificent flowers continue to hold a special place in gardens and floral arrangements around the world. They are admired for their lush blooms and intoxicating fragrance.

Peony Lithographs
The following FREE Botanical Printables are digitized Lithographs – they are part of a collection with the title “Omslag met serie bloemen en fruit” (“Cover with series of flowers and fruit”).
Litography is a printmaking process done by stone and metal. Lithography is unique as it closely resembles a painting or drawing.
These vintage botanical illustrations, more accurately called lithographs, were all created by Anton Weiss (1801-1851). Though he also painted portraits and religious scenes, Weiss achieved lasting fame for his still lifes, particularly those in the grand tradition of Dutch still life painting.
- print maker: Anton Weiss
- printer: Jean Augustin Daiwaille
